In science and philosophy, elegance means theoretical economy: solutions that entail the fewest possible basic principles while explaining a great deal. Elegance in art has more to do with decorum, good taste and refined sensibility. It is the opposite of the grotesque and the visionary, modes in which unruly imagination runs riot over rational wisdom.
